Even larger historic Oak Park homes sometimes need more space to better support modern family life. We looked to expand while honoring the home's original architecture. With a modest addition, we introduced a new primary suite, family room, and mudroom. We designed it to feel seamlessly integrated with the existing home; every decision needed to follow the scale, proportions, and detailing already present throughout the house. Here, new spaces feel connected to the historic structure rather than distinct from it, avoiding any kind of old up front/new in the back mullet that breaks every old home lover’s heart.
The new primary suite offers a quiet retreat, complete with a light-filled bath that balances classic detailing with modern comfort. A generous family room provides space for gathering and everyday living, while the mudroom introduces much-needed organization. The result is a home that feels both expanded and deeply rooted — honoring its history, protecting its charm, and gracefully supporting the rhythms of contemporary family life.
